“Stories are what we are; telling and listening to stories is what we do.”

– Arthur Kleinman, MD

NHS offers expertise in establishing narrative practices in health care settings. We help to identify needs and talent within institutions and provide access to arts and education resources in the local community and beyond. We offer seminars, workshops and arts events, led by graduates of the Program in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University.

QuoteGrayPlanning

NHS consults with hospital administrators and medical educators to develop a custom narrative medicine program that builds on a culture of compassion. We assess the current narrative practices and needs of the organization, identify opportunities for strengthening and expansion, and offer strategies for implementation.

QuoteGray1Education

NHS offers informational seminars, education in narrative medicine, and training in workshop facilitation, drawing on scholarship and methodology developed at Columbia University.

QuoteGray2Workshops

NHS offers reflective writing workshops for groups within the health care community. Workshops are typically offered as a series of 90 minute sessions for groups of 8 -12 and are led by trained facilitators who bring selected narratives as a focus for an intimate experience in listening, telling and self-reflection. Workshops can be tailored for groups of clinicians, employees, patients or caregivers or mixed groups.
